Commanders' New Offensive Coordinator David Blough Praised by Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson

Instructions

David Blough, the recently appointed offensive coordinator for the Washington Commanders, is highly regarded across the NFL. Last offseason, following his inaugural year as an assistant quarterbacks coach for the Commanders, Blough was sought after by at least three different teams. However, Washington firmly rejected all transfer attempts, underscoring their belief in his potential.

Among those who tried to recruit Blough was Ben Johnson, currently the head coach of the Chicago Bears. Johnson had previously worked with Blough for three seasons in Detroit, where Blough served as a backup quarterback, and Johnson was the offensive coordinator for one of those seasons. Johnson quickly recognized Blough's talent and, upon becoming Chicago's head coach in 2025, attempted to bring Blough to his staff. Yet, the Commanders remained resolute in retaining their promising young coach.

Following the amicable departure of offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury last week, the Commanders moved swiftly to promote Blough. After interviewing five candidates, Washington officially named Blough as their new offensive coordinator. This marks a remarkably rapid ascent for the 30-year-old former quarterback, who has only two seasons of coaching experience.

During a recent media session before the NFC Divisional Round game against the San Francisco 49ers, Johnson spoke enthusiastically about Blough. He emphasized Blough's bright future, intelligence, and natural ability to connect with both coaches and players. Johnson also noted that Blough is highly respected not only by him but also by the entire Washington staff. He expressed confidence that Blough would excel in his new role, particularly given his background as a quarterback, which provides him with unique insight into elevating the position. Johnson even predicted that Blough would likely secure a head coaching position in the near future.

Speculation abounds regarding the offensive scheme Blough will implement in Washington. Having worked under Johnson, Vikings coach Kevin O'Connell, and Kingsbury, it is anticipated that Blough's offensive philosophy will incorporate elements from both Johnson and O'Connell's systems, alongside aspects of Kingsbury's offense that quarterback Jayden Daniels favors.

Johnson offered Blough some valuable advice, suggesting that every coach should leverage their strengths and surround themselves with individuals who can compensate for their weaknesses. He believes Blough is well aware of his own strengths and areas for development and is committed to optimizing his position. Johnson lauded Blough's character, asserting that his positive demeanor will resonate with everyone he encounters.

While Johnson has his own history with the Commanders, having interviewed for their head coaching vacancy in 2024 before Dan Quinn was hired, he clearly endorses Washington's decision to promote Blough. The Lions had also attempted to interview Blough for their offensive coordinator role, but the Commanders once again prevented his departure, demonstrating their unwavering commitment to their rising star.
